History

Irish Moss (Chondrus crispus) is a sea plant that grows along the coasts of the North Atlantic Ocean on mainly rocky shores. It has a long and varied history as a food and health aid. Irish immigrants who found it growing on the rugged shores of Canada and New England were the first to gather and use it in America.

Irish Moss contains high levels of sulphur, vitamins, minerals, and iodine. Irish Moss puddings, jelly, and dried jellied fruit are popular, and it used as a thickening agent in a variety of culinary products. Irish Moss is also a soothing emollient, or skin softener, and is used in cosmetics and lotions.
